The New Deal Final2000 Book Cover

My Pepperdine colleague and frequent coauthor, Gordon Lloyd, and I are releasing a short Hoover Press book on October 1 titled “The New Deal and Modern American Conservatism: A Defining Rivalry.”

In it, we argue that the birth of modern American conservatism was actually not in the 1950’s, as frequently claimed, but in Herbert Hoover’s post-presidential responses to FDR’s New Deal in the 1930’s. In that sense, the New Deal was our “French Revolution” and Herbert Hoover became the voice crying in the wilderness against it, but also defining what we would all come to know as modern American conservatism.

In our view, the New Deal is still the template for American domestic policy today, and the Hoover-Roosevelt “debates” of the 1930’s are very much like our political debates today. So we “go back” to the 1930’s and then “come back” to today to explore the roots and future of modern American conservatism.

It will be released October 1, but you may preorder now from Amazon.com.
