What Sort of Exceptionalism? (Townhall.com) May 26, 2011

President Obama’s foreign policy is confused, in part, because he really doesn’t

get American exceptionalism. Obama himself has said he believes in it, in the same way Brits and Greeks believe in their own exceptionalism. But if everyone is exceptional, obviously no one is.

American exceptionalism meansAmerica—with its moral core, its commitment to freedom and its republican form of government—is an exceptional nation, a city on a hill.  If our president doesn’t believe in that, thenAmerica, we have a problem.

We can’t seem to decide where and when to intervene in the world, or when to collaborate and when to go our own way.

Much of this is confused foreign policy results because, in his heart, Obama seems not to believe in American exceptionalism.  In these difficult times, we very much need a president who does.
