I am surprised to say this, but if we want to tame big government and tackle our economic woes, maybe we should start paying attention to places like Canada and Germany.
While the U.S. tries to spend its way out of a recession, Germany (and much of Europe) have cut government spending. It’s too early to declare victory, but Germany’s real output for the second quarter grew at a 9% rate, compared with just 1.6% in the U.S.
Canada, once derided as out socialist neighbor, has actually been cutting the size of federal government for over a decade. Its percentage of government spending compared to GDP dropped 13 points between 1992 and 2008, while the U.S. reached record levels.
When we lag behind countries like Germany and Canada in fiscal discipline, you know it’s time to get serious about change.
