Don’t Just Do Something… (Townhall.com) April 30, 2009

I have a book for Washington politicians to read. It’s called: “Don’t Just Do
Something, Stand There.” A lot of what is driving public policy today is the sense that government needs to do something when, in fact, we don’t really know what to do and we are likely making things worse.
We pass a massive stimulus bill, most of which doesn’t really stimulate, and doesn’t even get spent till next year.
Do something about AIG bonuses, so we pass a tax that probably isn’t constitutional.
We must save the economy, so we bail out firms that end up collapsing or becoming wards of the state anyway.
I think of the words of Senator Bob Dole: “There are a lot of bad ideas in Washington and somebody needs to stop them.”
